Monthly Digest of Statistics Volume 750, June 2008

Description

Monthly Digest of Statistics provides the latest monthly and quarterly statistics for UK businesses, economy and society. An important reference work, it is an indispensable source of statistics covering 20 topics including amongst others: National Accounts; Population and Vital Statistics; Labour Market; Social Services; and Agriculture.

Designer and merchant, collector and tastemaker, Thomas O'Brien has made a career of translating cool notions of modernism into an easy and generous array of modern styles that anyone can attain. Now he introduces readers to a range of those styles - from casual to formal, vintage to urban - alongside stunning photography and charming design stories. O'Brien carefully describes the design process of his chosen projects, including a downtown loft, a traditional estate, and a converted schoolhouse. Each home explores a view on the modern design spectrum he has created, as well as the individual choices that make the design unique. He explains not only what was at work to create a given style, but how readers can import those practices to their own homes and personal design sensibilities. Important design principles such as architectural authenticity, colour relationships, correctness of scale and informed collecting are threaded through a practical Monthly Digest of Statistics Volume 750, June 2008 download ebook pdf narrative that reads like a master class in interior design. "American Modern" is an inspiring design volume that will redefine the way readers think about modern interiors.

The Sea Hunters 2

Description

In this action-packed adventure book Cussler relates the recent activities of NUMA, the organisation that features in his thriller novels and which he also created in real life: the National Underwater and Marine Agency. Cussler takes his fiction into the sphere of fact in a series of daring and audacious dives, seeking to reclaim wrecks lost beneath the surface of sea, lakes and swamps. Each of the sections of this underwater adventure book contains both an exciting account of the loss of the wreck concerned and Cussler's attempt to bring it back to the surface. Here Cussler and Dirgo recount the discovery of a seventeenth-century man-of-war; Civil War Ironclads; the wreck of the Marie Celeste; and the Carpathia, the ship that rescued the survivors of the Titanic and JFK's PT 109. This book is sure to entrance Cussler's legions of devoted fans as well as the increasing number of people fascinated with extreme sports, notably deep-sea diving.

In "Yes Man," Wallace recounts his months-long commitment to complete openness with profound insight and humbling honesty. Saying yes takes Wallace into a new plane of existence: a place where money comes as easily as Lonely Planet Make My Day San Francisco download ebook it goes, nodding a lot can lead to a long weekend overseas with new friends, and romance isn't as complicated as it seems. Yes eventually leads to the biggest question of all: "Do you, Danny Wallace, take this woman . . ." From the author of the "New York Times "bestselling phenomenon "The Power of Habit "comes a fascinating new book that explores the science of productivity, and why, in today s world, managing "how" you think rather than "what" you think can transform your life. In Landscape and Memory Schama ranges over continents and centuries to reveal the psychic claims that human beings have made on nature. He tells of the Nazi cult of the primeval German forest; the play of Christian and pagan myth in Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers; and the duel between a monumental sculptor and a feminist gadfly on the slopes of Mount Rushmore. The result is a triumphant work of history, naturalism, mythology, and art.

Anais Nin: Delta of Venus

Delta of Venus

Description

An extraordinarily rich and exotic collection from the mistress of erotic writing In "Delta of Venus," Anais Nin pens a lush, magical world where the characters of her imagination possess the most universal of desires and exceptional of talents. Among these provocative stories, a Hungarian adventurer seduces wealthy women then vanishes with their money; a veiled woman selects strangers from a chic restaurant for private trysts; and a Parisian hatmaker named Mathilde leaves her husband for the opium dens of Peru."

A novel of searing eroticism and sensuality set against the broad sweep of twentieth-century history, the Booker Prize shortlisted THE WHITE Delta of Venus ebook pdf HOTEL is a modern classic. It is a dream of electrifying eroticism and inexplicable violence, recounted by a young woman to her analyst, Sigmund Freud. It is a horrifying yet restrained narrative of the Holocaust. It is a searing vision of the wounds of our century and an attempt to heal them. Interweaving poetry and case history, fantasy and historical truth-telling, THE WHITE HOTEL is a modern classic of enduring emotional power that attempts nothing less than to reconcile the notion of individual destiny with that of historical fate. 'I quickly came to feel that I had found that book, that mythical book, that would explain us to ourselves' Leslie Epstein, New York Times

The Leviathan in the State Theory of Thomas Hobbes: Meaning and Failure of a Political Symbol

Description

One of the most significant political philosophers of the twentieth century, Carl Schmitt is a deeply controversial figure who has been labeled both a Nazi sympathizer and a modern-day Thomas Hobbes. First published in 1938, "The Leviathan in the State Theory of Thomas Hobbes" used the Enlightenment philosopher's enduring symbol of the protective Leviathan to address the nature of modern statehood. A work that predicted the demise of the Third Reich and that still holds relevance in today's security-obsessed society, this volume will be essential reading for students and scholars of political science.

Roel Meijer: Global Salafism: Islam's New Religious Movement

Global Salafism: Islam's New Religious Movement

Description

Given the salience of the terms 'Salafism' or 'Jihadi-Salafism,' not only in specialist analysis but also in the media, the currents of Islamic thought grouped under these terms are poised to become more widely known. Yet much western analysis suffers from a lack of sophistication and discernment on this important doctrinal trend in contemporary Islamic thought, so that 'Salafism' is some what liberally employed to denote, with far too much specificity, a phenomenon that is only opaquely defined to the western reader. The contributors to "Global Salafism" are careful to map out not only the differences in the Salafist schools, but also to underscore the fluidity of this broad doctrinal tendency. They examine the phenomenon both in its regional manifestations - which demonstrate surprising diversities, ambivalences and contradictions - and in its shared essential doctrines. In so doing they highlight the ambivalences inherent in Salafism itself, and the Salafist believers' claim to be reviving Islamic thought for the modern age - albeit through the paradox of 'out-antiquing the antique' by appealing to a greater, older, purer authenticity. With considerable subtlety the tensions between the local and the global aspirations of exponents and claimants to the 'Salafist method' are explored and the parallels and divergences weighed. This is a unique book that can justifiably claim to be pioneering, as it is the first of its kind to take the phenomenon of Salafism as a whole, and address the task of defining what is, despite its crucial importance, a relatively neglected field.

Martin Crawford: A Forest Garden Year: With Martin Crawford

A Forest Garden Year: With Martin Crawford

Description

Fifteen years ago, inspired by the pioneering work of Robert Hart, gardener Martin Crawford moved from conventional organic gardening to creating a forest garden from a bare field. Today his garden is a wonderful example of what can be done with a minimum of effort to produce an abundant crop of unusual edible trees, plants, shrubs and ground cover. You can apply the principles of forest gardening to spaces big and small. Here Martin takes you through the seasons in his Devon forest garden, and shows you how to plan your planting to mimic the layering, density and diversity of a forest. A wide variety of edible plants can be grown: for example, Nepalese raspberry, Siberian purslane, Turkish rocket and Good King Henry, lime trees (their leaves make a good salad), bamboo (young shoots are tasty when steamed), snowbell trees (for their fruit), mulberry and chokeberry. A Forest Garden Year shows you how to graft an apple tree to crop a variety of apples over several months, how to grow shiitake mushrooms and perennial leeks, how to pollard and prune, protect crops from wind, attract beneficial insects and increase valuable minerals in the soil - all the while creating a haven for yourself and for wildlife.

Dark Continent: Europe's Twentieth Century

Description

"A useful, important book that reminds us, at the right time, how hard [European unity] has been, and how much care must be taken to avoid the terrible old temptations." --"Los Angeles Times" Dark Continent provides an alternative history of the twentieth century, one in which the triumph of democracy was anything but a forgone conclusion and fascism and communism provided rival political solutions that battled and sometimes triumphed in an effort to determine the course the continent would take. Mark Mazower strips away myths that have comforted us since World War II, revealing Europe as an entity constantly engaged in a bloody project of self-invention. Here is a history not of inevitable victories and forward marches, but of narrow squeaks and unexpected twists, where townships boast a bronze of Mussolini on horseback one moment, only to melt it down and recast it as a pair of noble partisans the next. Unflinching, intelligent, Dark Continent provides a provocative vision of Europ's past, present, and future-and confirms Mark Mazower as a historian of valuable gifts.

John Buchan: The Thirty-Nine Steps

The Thirty-Nine Steps

Description

John Buchan wrote The Thirty-Nine Steps while he was seriously ill at the beginning of the First World War. In it he introduces his most famous hero, Richard Hannay, who, despite claiming to be an 'ordinary fellow', is caught up in the dramatic race against a plot to devastate the British war effort. Hannay is hunted across the Scottish moors by police and spy-ring alike, and must outwit his intelligent and pitiless enemy in the corridors of Whitehall and, finally, at the site of the mysterious thirty-nine steps. The best-known of Buchan's thrillers, The Thirty-Nine Steps has been continuously in print since first publication and has been filmed three times. In this, the only critical edition, Christopher Harvie's introduction interweaves the writing of the tale with the equally fascinating story of how John Buchan, publisher and lawyer, came in from the cold and, via The Thirty-Nine Steps, ended the war as spymaster and propaganda chief.

Nigel D. Bennett,Megan Crawford,Marion Cartwright: Effective Educational Leadership

Effective Educational Leadership

Description

'Keith Grint's persuasive essay on the art of leadership in "Effective Educational Leadership" is uncannily accurate' - Tim Brighouse, "Times Educational Supplement". 'Its unique contribution is the exploration of links between leadership discourses and the themes that have emerged from the school effectiveness movements since the 1980s. Riley and MacBeath provide one of the most valuable contributions to the volume by arguing that there are no generic recipes for educational leadership but ingredients which need to be carefully selected with a knowledge of specific contexts and needs. I would use this book with graduate students and practitioners seeking to develop a perspective about contemporary educational leadership. Its greatest contribution is its exploration of the links between effective leadership and effective education. The book also provides optimism in that many of the authors have not capitulated to the reductionist visions of the past two decades.''There is still hope that educational theorists and practitioners view the life world as the true source of educational inspiration' - "Journal of Educational Administration". 'Leadership is the theme of this decade. This series provides an enormously valuable overview of all the critical issues involved in designing leadership as the main strategy for educational reform...A great and timely collection' - Michael Fullan, Dean, OISE/University of Toronto. 'This book makes an excellent contribution to the current debate on Educational Leadership. It blends theory with practice and as such provides an important resource for many aspects of leadership development programmes at a variety of levels. Its ability to draw upon international perspectives along with examples beyond conventional educational parameters enhances its quality.''The book contains a well documented account of how leadership has been studied which will appeal both to the academic reader, and to the professional provider of CPD in leadership, offering a wealth of information that can be practically adopted and adapted for a range of courses' - Stephen Merrill, "Journal of Inservice Education". Educational management and administration studies focus on leadership as a key determinant of effective educational institutions; and currently, much leadership preparation is characterized by a rational skills-focused approach. Placing current thinking in leadership studies in its organizational and historical context, this book explores its implications for leadership preparation, leadership theory in action and examines some of the dilemmas and tensions facing educational leaders in practice. It draws on literature and research from both the private and public sectors. It is deliberately international in its content and focus, and examines a range of practice both within and outside education. Each chapter has a short introduction by the editors setting it in context. This book is for providers and students in higher educational institutions; for postgraduate level courses in educational management; and for leadership development provision for Headteachers induction programmes, NPQH and LPSH. It is also suitable for short courses and for practitioners occupying or aspiring to leadership roles in schools, colleges and other educational organizations.

In nine previously published short stories and one brand new, never-before-seen Sherlock Holmes mystery—available together for the first time—Laurie R. King blends her long-running brand of crime fiction with historical treats and narrative sleight of hand. At the heart of the collection is a prequel novella that begins with England’s declaration of war in 1914. As told in Mary Russell’s teenage diaries, the whip-smart girl investigates familial mysteries, tracks German spies through San Francisco, and generally delights with her extraordinary mind—until an unimaginable tragedy strikes. It's very rare that we see the emergence of a completely original idea in the world of books. Dame Edna Everage's masterly history of Australian civilization is one such idea, and, possums, you will never think of historical writing in the same way again. 'From our dainty gum nuts and towering Uluru to our world-class sharks Effective Educational Leadership pdf and Opera House, marauding possums and poets, taking in game-changing inventions such as the dual-flush toilet and zinc cream, you will be amazed at what our sunburnt country has contributed to modern civilization.' Barbies. Bex powders. Bogans. Feral Koalas. The immortal pink Lamington, Australia's contribution to world patisserie. Plastic banknotes. Thongs, Uggs and utes. Not to speak of the Great Barrier Reef, goon and Nellie Melba. One of the world's most distinguished thinkers and cultural personalities, Dame Edna Everage has inspired generations of Australian artists and icons, from Germaine Greer and Peter Carey to Kylie Minogue and Shane Warne.
